TREKKING 2 – MURGIA OF MATERA: SAN NICOLA ALL’OFRA AND CRISTO LA SELVA

Duration: h 4:00 Difficulty: Medium

The tour starts from a slope of the Gravina gorge in a south direction from Matera, near the district Agna.
After a short walk, we’ll reach the rock-hewn complex of San Nicola all’Ofra which is spreaded on three levels and is completely carved into the rock. Originally it was a monastery (with a central room for common activities and few cells for hermits), was later converted into a rural stable for sheep. From here we keep moving along the slope of the ravine, the we reach the church of Cristo la Selva. Admission to the inner part of the church (optional) is possible only by reservation and on payment; anyway it is not strictly necessary to visit it from inside. During the excursion you can admire numerous natural caves and cave complex, gathering in small rural villages where, for centuries, agricultural and pastoral activities were practised. Thanks to the many sights, the landscape of the canyon is very impressive. Also, there you can observe many natural aspects, expression of an almost unpolluted area.
